What Holiday?

Guest Post by Loki

This weekend is Easter Sunday. The legislature is taking a four day holiday and the L&C Library will be closed. I am slightly confused. Why are they taking off for a holiday that does not exist?

The rest of the government does not get this holiday. There is no overtime pay associated with this weekend. No schedule changes or extra compensation for emergency personnel. Water production and sewer plant operators are not given the day off or extra pay. As far as I know people regularly scheduled to work this Sunday are not given extra compensation.

So do library personnel take vacation time to take a holiday for Easter? And why do they get the day off? Maybe someone knows if our legislators get paid days off.

  1. Maybe someone knows if our legislators get paid days off.

The Legislature gets paid whenever either chamber works. $82.64 per day with $5 more for the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House. When taking “breaks”, the legislature loses its per diem after 3 days – so, by taking Thurs-> Tuesday off, the legislators do not get paid any salary and lose per diem for Sunday and Monday. Those legislators renting hotel rooms have to pay for the room while gone to maintain the monthly rate. The legislators also do not get reimbursed for mileage to and from home if they have already claimed the 3 trips they are allowed.
