Not generally thought of as one of America’s great musicians nor historians, comedian Steve Martin performed his new blue grass ballad, “Me and Paul Revere” on the Mall at the annual Capitol Fourth Concert in Washington DC. Martin tells the story of that famous ride from the perspective of the horse who carried the dedicated patriot through the countryside that fateful night…
Apparently Sarah Palin got it right and even that bastion of Hollywood liberals, Steve Martin, acknowledges it (although begrudgingly at best in his introduction to the song tonight): After being captured, Revere warned the British that the rebels in Lexington were armed and ready to fight for their freedom. Who knew? Evidently not many of the liberal intelligentsia who learned everything they know about that episode of American history from a nineteenth century poem.
Apparently? Let me get this straight…you take a modern song and use it to rewrite history the way Sarah Palin did? Brilliant! Please contact me. I may have a gig for you re-writing Wikipedia entries.
Do you think the liberals would know that Wentworth Cheswell, a free black man also rode to warn about the British?
Oh stop! Do you think Tea Garglers would know that old Stewball was a racehorse that never drank whiskey, but always drank whine?
NOTE: I have approved the two comments from Zoot House although they come very close to crossing the line as far as this blog goes. I hope in the future that Mr. Zoot will be more respectful of our readers.
Now, I will comment on the “substance” of his comments:
1.) He may want to do a little more research about Paul Revere’s adventures. He won’t seem so uninformed if he does.
2.) I have no idea what he is trying to communicate in the second comment. I believe Martin was writing a song about a horse named Brown Beauty (or Betty – I’ve seen both references) that was loaned to him for his ride from Concord to Lexington. I sincerely doubt that he would go out of his way to include a verse that coincides with Sarah Palin’s comments simply to support her explanation of the events of that night.
Longfellow already rewrote history. And lazy teachers and academics continue to spread this fictitious history.
As for Zoot, he sounds like another hysterical liberal who throws hateful speech because he has no arguments and thinks he is being being cute while actually he is just a troll.
I like to call them liberal snipers. They throw out statements that are full of hate and try to muddy up the waters and draw everyone else into a mud fight. Note the use of ‘Tea Garglers’ and his obvious Palin Derangement Syndrome.
He is hoping to bring about hateful retorts to justify his delusional belief that all conservatives are ‘mean spirited’ and hate poor people.
I would say he is probably a high school student or college student who thinks that he is being brilliant but is actually showing that liberals are the real hateful people in this country. Probably mimicking his teachers.
He probably got thrown off the Helena IR site and is looking for a new place to be hateful.
Ignore trolls, they like mud fights, it’s there home turf.
He will push your buttons enough that BCM will eventually ban him. Then wait for claims of the right to free speech, while ignoring the fact that it is not his soap box.
Don’t you all think there’s a distinction to be made between warning the Brits and taunting them after you’ve been captured?
Lady Sarah might not make that distinction, but I think historians (and people interested in history) would.
As a thoroughly deranged liberal, I can tell you that there are only two potential Republican candidates I fear: Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann. Old Stewball rode all the way to Alaska, then crossed from Little Diomede to Big Diomede into Russia, and from there straight to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem where he leapt into Heaven. It’s called the Night Journey.
Pesky facts about your Mr. Cheswell, Loki.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wentworth_Cheswell
I don’t have any idea why you want to take this personal, and the moderator questioned MY post. That’s pretty rich, folks. Let’s see if you can keep personalities out of this and deal with facts.
Here’s Steve Martin on the song:
NORRIS: You’ve been working on this for a while, so I’m wondering, what was your reaction when Paul Revere rode into the news cycle recently [b]when Sarah Palin spoke about his famous ride?
Mr. MARTIN: I try to stay out of the political scene, and I always think it’s never wise to ad lib when you’re talking, especially about facts.
http://www.npr.org/2011/07/04/137609359/steve-martin-talks-about-his-fourth-of-july-song
Let’s fact check Sarah Palin, shall we?
Politifact references Fischer in explaining how Sarah screwed things up:
[passage from book that Martin references in the NPR interview]
With six pistols pointed at him, Revere spoke with a spirit the British officers found infuriating in a provincial prisoner, who seemed not to know his place, or to care about the danger he faced. One of the prisoners, Elijah Sanderson, listened at a distance and later remembered, “I heard him pick up with energy to them.”
“Gentlemen,” Revere told them, “you’ve missed of your aim.”
“What of our aim?” one answered in a “hard” tone. Another insisted that they were out after deserters, a frequent employment of British officers in America.
“I know better,” Paul Revere boldly replied. “I know what you are after, and I have alarmed the country all the way up.”
So Palin is correct about one point: Revere did warn the British that they were going to face armed resistance from some 500 colonists.
But Palin’s comment suggests Revere was “running around ringing bells and warning the British,” said James Giblin, author of The Many Rides of Paul Revere. “He wasn’t, of course.”
“He was captured by the British and never made it to Concord,” Giblin said. “While he was a prisoner of the British, he warned them they might meet a strong force of Americans. He was sort of boastful, telling them, ‘You don’t know what kind of force you’re going to encounter at Concord.’ He was propagandizing for the rebels.”
“She really needed a fact-checker before she spoke,” Gilbin said.
http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2011/jun/06/sarah-palin/was-trash-talking-british-part-paul-reveres-ride/
Sarah Palin is a case study in shooting from the hip, and a lot of what comes out of her mouth is nonsense. Defend her if you will, but let’s not be so loose with the facts.
And, Loki, you are so far off in who you think I am. I’m a 63 year old poli sci major and 100% disabled Marine Corps combat veteran. Nothing that I write or think is in the least bit delusional. I think you owe me an apology, but I won’t hold my breath.
Sorry about the the code not working here.
Best take on Palin’s revisionist history yet. I wonder if conservatives have a sense of humor?
http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/388583/june-06-2011/paul-revere-s-famous-ride
Yep, Loki – you pegged Zoot on the nose. Someone who quotes Colbert as an authority on anything – especially history – can’t be taken seriously.
yes, steve martin is known for his historical accuracy in songwriting ..
re: this verse in his last big hit:
“born in patagonia, moved to arizona: king tut”
he is quite the authority no ??
But wait, Basket Case Manager…any comment on Loki making this personal? You said that MY original post here “came close to crossing the line as far as this blog goes”. Can you explain that to me? And can you explain how Loki’s post, and now yours, DON’T come close to that line? I didn’t get personal with either of you, but BOTH of you did with me. Don’t you find that even the slightest bit hypocritical??
Anyway, I deal in facts, not hysteria. Do conservatives have a sense of humor? Clearly, no. And I didn’t “quote” Colbert. His link is there merely to prove my point, which it did quite nicely, thank you.
oh yes steve martin is the paragon of historical accuracy .. in his previous smash hit: “king tut” he sings: “born in babalonia moved to arizona: king tut” … then there’s: “king tut.. he’s my favorite honky” ..
Zoot House said: But wait, Basket Case Manager…any comment on Loki making this personal? You said that MY original post here “came close to crossing the line as far as this blog goesâ€.
Ok, lets make it ‘not’ personal. This Tea Gargler says all liberals are delusional Kool-Aid drinker who only make fun of women while their president is a total dork.
See, it is not personal, I included all liberals.
For some great humor, how about Obama’s gaffe’s. I laughed so hard.

I hope liberals have a sense of humor.
One can only wonder why the obsession with Palin since she holds no public office and is not running for office.
One can only conclude that liberals hate women.
Well, that conclusion sums up the feebleness of the right wing mind, doesn’t it? I adore women that can actually think beyond sound bites and bullshit.
You can’t hide from the fact that you took this personal and that Basket Case Manager enabled you in doing so.
Furthermore, this has to be the most infantile thing I’ve read in years:
“This Tea Gargler says all liberals are delusional Kool-Aid drinker who only make fun of women while their president is a total dork.”
Who’s making fun of women, Loki? I’ll tell you what…you’re not representing them very well at all on this line at all. That’s what the women observing this are saying.
zoot house
I have dealt with hate filled sexist liberals before, not to say you are one. And I have grown to love mud fights after having been forced into so many with progressives. In fact they excite me! I get all tingly.
Your phony claim of personal attacks I find extremely funny. You attack ‘Tea Garglers’ on a conservative site and claim to be not making personal attacks knowing that some of the people who visit here regularly must belong to the Tea Party. You made the first attack and now find yourself hoisted by your own petard.
Then after making childish remarks you have the audacity to claim my statements are infantile. Which is exactly what you want. The progressives have no plans for the economy. They keep doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results and when they don’t get them, the economy/unemployment reports gave “unexpected†results. They can’t blame Bush anymore so they have to attack with emotions because they lack facts and results. Everything they have done has made things worse. Thus the class warfare, ‘Those evil Republicans are for the rich’. So funny, Obama making those claims as he invites those same rich to fund raisers. His pandering to lobbyist after saying he would not let lobbyists run the White House. His whining about corporate jets while he jets around the country. His whining about subsidizing rich corporations while he is in bed with GE and NBC. So progressives must attack childishly so as to distract the public from the fact that the country is going to hell in a hand basket.
So after the ‘Hope and change’ president completely messes up the country and finds that he can no longer use the ‘Bush’ excuse he must resort to emotions and class envy. False claims that Republicans are for the rich while Democrats are for the poor. Emotional attacks are all that is left for the party of hope and dreams as their dreams have all turned to nightmares. And that is exactly what you are trying to do here.
Your phony claim that, “And I didn’t “quote†Colbert. His link is there merely to prove my point†was about the most oxymoronic statement I have read in a month. I had a great LOL over that one. Linking is quoting. And it does not prove we lack a sense of humor, it proves your obsession with Palin.
Zoot house also wrote, “Who’s making fun of women, Loki?â€. Not me, that was you right from the start with your attack on Palin. Progressives will even throw a woman democrat presidential candidate under the bus if it helps their cause. Just look at how Hillary was treated. Still waiting for NOW to say something.
Finally you wrote, “That’s what the women observing this are saying.†I was surprised at that statement,… that you know any women??? That is a nice use of propaganda, like saying ‘some people say’, ‘experts say’, ‘some people believe’ but you have no real facts. And I am sure that any women you know are progressive like yourself with identical opinions.
Zoot house also wrote, “I’m a 63 year old poli sci major and 100% disabled Marine Corps combat veteran.†Political Science, that explains a LOT.
By the way, thank you for your military service.
p.s. When I went to school they actually taught things of use. The class on recognizing propaganda and how to use it have been very helpful. Is the political science major where you learned propaganda? And have you thought of treatment for Palin Derangement Syndrome? And BCM didn’t enable me any more than she enabled you.
revealing an untruth, or resisting mangled revisionist history isn’t a form of “attack” imo . those who wish to not be ridiculed should not say or write ridiculous things .. and their wish will be granted ..
the purpose of paul revere’s ride was not to “warn the british” and no amount of spinning will make it otherwise .. and the gender of the person making or defending such a assinine claim has nothing to do with whether or not the characterization of paul revere’s mission as being “to warn the british” ..
Quote: “Zoot house also wrote, “I’m a 63 year old poli sci major and 100% disabled Marine Corps combat veteran.†Political Science, that explains a LOT.”
See now, this kind of statement is just a waste of time. It’s meaningless. Rather than launch a personal broadside — and a pointless one at that, because who knows what it even means, other than a way of flouncing out of the room in a huff — why not just take on directly something that zoot house says that you disagree with? Reading through your posts, I see a lot of huffing and puffing and harrumphing and pulling yourself up and railing against libs in general — but I have no idea where you actually disagree with him.
Who know — maybe you don’t disagree with him at all. Ever thought of that?
Wobbly One
Zoot’s posts are meant to distract. Keep playing up Palin as a fool and an example of what he believes is a typical conservative woman. He picks a weakness and exploits it. He attacks all conservatives while hiding behind ridicule. Right from Saul Alinsky’s rules for radicals. While also distracting everyone from Obama’s total failure with the economy and unemployment.
I tend to use similar tactics and generalizations when arguing with people who are just a distraction. I did get carried away as I am wont to do dealing with especially silly statements.
I should have just stuck with my point that he has no point. Palin is still not running for office. His hatred of Palin has him posting to rile up conservatives in general and keep Obama off the topic page.
I get a bit peeved when progressives just make silly posts with no point except to ridicule others while ignoring the same type of mistakes made by their own icons.
But I am interested why you would point out my wasteful time while ignoring Zoot’s waste of time with attacks of Palin, his statement, “Well, that conclusion sums up the feebleness of the right wing mind, …” which was totally lame generalization of all conservatives and his calling Tea Party members Tea Garglers. I guess we should be happy he didn’t say Tea Baggers. My statement about his education was just as pointless as his attack of the ‘right wing mind’ and was just a response to his.
It is hard to argue with someone who just throws snide condescending comments without really stating any points. So far the only thing we know is that he does not like Palin because of her statements. Her statements were not brilliant but Obama and Biden have made idiotic statements. And arguing tit-for-tat against someone just wanting to argue is a considerable waste of time. We could spend days just finding more stupid statements from both sides. But I also do not like to just sit silently and listen to childish attacks. I find that to be a major failure of conservatives. We try to be civil and play by the rules arguing facts while liberals tend to use personal attacks, class envy, greed and anything else that brings on an emotional response. We need to attack using facts emotions and appeal to the electorate with facts and emotions. All the facts in the world will not get us the White House and the Senate if we can not also raise the emotions of the electorate.
Wobbly one wrote, “Who know — maybe you don’t disagree with him at all. Ever thought of that?” I doubt Zoot and I could agree on the color of the sky. But that is just a generalization from what he has posted so far.
Loki,
You wrote: “I get a bit peeved when progressives just make silly posts with no point except to ridicule others while ignoring the same type of mistakes made by their own icons.”
I hear ya. But here’s the thing: Obama and Biden are serious, substantive people who on occasion slip up verbally. Like we all do. I don’t expect you to agree with that, necessarily, but Palin to me is very different. I can’t think of a thing she’s said, ever, that would qualify as substantive. She’s compelling in her way, and I think she has a lot of natural skills. I would even say she has charisma and presence. But verbally? She’s pure word salad. I detect no train of thought.
I would expect her to be able to put together a terrific presentation of… herself. Her family. Her house. Her town. Her state. She really ought to be in PR. I would not expect her to be able to think anything through.
Make sure you go to see Sarah’s film “The Undefeated” next Friday.
I’m sure that neither Zoot nor Wobbly have any intention of seeing “The Undefeated” or reading “Going Rogue” or “American by Heart” (which were actually written by Governor Palin). Their minds are made up and they have no intentions of becoming confused by the facts.
Loki – Thanks for your efforts to counter the victims of Palin Derangement Syndrome. Unfortunately, it’s a futile task.
Sarah Palin is a very smart, effective, and proven leader – and that scares the holy hell out of the liberals (and some independents and conservatives too, for that matter). I have one word for all of them – “BOO!!!”.
Wobbly one wrote; “Like we all do. I don’t expect you to agree with that, necessarily, but Palin to me is very different.”
Yes she is very different. She is not an elected officer. Yet we still have PDS and the media hounding her. The dumpster diving media is going through her past email with glee hoping to find something. They never and I repeat never showed this kind of interest in Obama.
By the way, did you see Obama at his last press conference? He didn’t have a teleprompter. He sounded almost exactly like Baucus.
Quote: “Yet we still have PDS and the media hounding her.”
And we have Palin placing her bus tour on “hold” when the press quit following her. Jury duty? Really? 😀
I don’t have PDS. I don’t click on articles about her or her family, and I don’t know anyone who does. I don’t have conversations in my “real life” about her. I don’t know anyone who’s interested in her.
Quote: “Sarah Palin is a very smart, effective, and proven leader – and that scares the holy hell out of the liberals (and some independents and conservatives too, for that matter). I have one word for all of them – “BOO!!!â€.”
Oh right. We’re all so frightened of Palin and are so afraid she might get the nomination! Also too, please don’t throw us in that briar patch! 😀
I am scared that Michele Bachmann will get nominated and Sarah Palin will not run. Michele Bachmann is only a pale substitute for Sarah Palin. Sarah Palin is the only Republican candidate who is a sure thing to defeat Obama.
While they are attacking Sarah Palin with trying to find fault with her saying the British while letting all the mistakes by Obama slide, they forget one thing, Sarah Palin was multitasking in that she was answering questions, talking to people, listening to people, shaking hands, and signing autographs. Sadly, when Obama has made his errors, he is only doing one thing – speaking.
Quote: “Palin was multitasking in that she was answering questions, talking to people, listening to people, shaking hands, and signing autographs”
Excellent point! I know when I’m multi-tasking, I start making shit up too! Just pull it right out of the ol’ asserooni!
This needs to be brought to the attention of the PTB immediately. It changes everything.
😀
Wobbly said, “And we have Palin placing her bus tour on “hold†when the press quit following her. Jury duty? Really? :Dâ€
So you are not for doing your civic duty and serving on a Jury? You do know that ignoring a Jury summons is a crime and you can be arrested. Or is that what you are hoping happens to Palin?
Wobbly said, “Excellent point! I know when I’m multi-tasking, I start making shit up too! Just pull it right out of the ol’ asserooni!â€
And is this a prime example of you making up shit?
Wobbly said, “I don’t have PDS. I don’t click on articles about her or her family, and I don’t know anyone who does. I don’t have conversations in my “real life†about her. I don’t know anyone who’s interested in her.â€
Good, then you can quit wasting all of your time on her and worry about Bachmann, because I hear even Bill Clinton is impressed by her. And you must agree Bachmann is the better candidate since you are still wasting your time on Palin and you have not found anything wrong with Bachmann. So Bachmann is someone you would vote for.
Because right now you look like you have PDS real, real, bad, cause you just can’t stop talking about her. Stalkers are less obsessed.
Quote: “I’m sure that neither Zoot nor Wobbly have any intention of seeing “The Undefeated†or reading “Going Rogue†or “American by Heart†(which were actually written by Governor Palin).”
FYI: Going Rogue was ghostwritten by Lynn Vincent. America by Heart — at least the parts that aren’t selected writings that Sarah likes — was ghostwritten by Jessica Gavora, who’s married to Jonah Goldberg.
Quote: “because I hear even Bill Clinton is impressed by her”
Gee. I didn’t have you figured for a Bill Clinton fan. 😀
Wobbly said, “Gee. I didn’t have you figured for a Bill Clinton fan. :D”
I’m not. But I figured since he was the titular leader of the Democrat party you would follow his lead.
By the way, who was the ghost writer of Obama’s memoirs? Or didn’t the media bother to find out so you could Google it. 😀
The Democrat party? Never heard of it. I belong to the Democratic party.
And Bill Clinton is not the titular head of that party either. Have you been in a time warp or something?
Finally, Bill Clinton is an excellent politician. What do you think he’s going to say about Sarah Palin? That he thinks she’s an idiot and the Dems should be so lucky that she gets the GOP nomination? Of course not. And I agree — as I’ve said — that she’s got excellent skills. She can fire up a crowd. She’s got great presence. But she’s not a leader, much less a wonk. And she hasn’t got the staying power to see a campaign through. She couldn’t even see her bus tour through! 😀
Quote: “And is this a prime example of you making up shit?”
What are you asking exactly? Am I making up that I make stuff up?
Hey, did you hear the one about the 3 missionaries and the 2 cannibals trying to get across the river?
😀
Democratic is a adjective. You belong to a adjective. Or is this more of that propaganda?
Yeah, propaganda, I’m sure of it. Lame claim that you are ‘democratic’ instead of democrat. It sounds better but has nothing to do with the modern party. Semi-Socialist maybe?
I get a kick out of propagandists who think by changing a name they change their image of what they really stand for politically. But image and propaganda is really all they have for a stance.
Still against doing your civic duty and promoting skipping jury duty I see.
I really think you should seek profesional help for the PDS. I’m getting tired of listening to a broken record with a one trick pony show.
Quote: “I get a kick out of propagandists who think by changing a name they change their image of what they really stand for politically. But image and propaganda is really all they have for a stance.”
And I get a kick out of penny ante, bullshit partisans who think they can change somebody else’s name. For giggles, I guess. Or just because they’re assholes.
Our party has long been known as the Democratic Party. Republicans (or “crudnuts,” as I like to call them, although I do sometimes favor “conservocrud”), for some reason, decided to change the name to Democrat Party. Isn’t that just precious??!!
As if we Democrats should pay any attention to what conservocrud say.
Anyway, I have some more GOTV to do. Just dashed in for a break.
Wobbly,
Name calling. I win. Whenever the adjective party resorts to name calling it means they lost the arguement. Hate filled rhetoric for which they are famous for is always their last resort.
By the way, if you are going to belong to paid shill for the DEMOCRAT party you should try to get the name right. Or are you just a volunteer shill for the GOTV?
See – http://www.democrats.org/
Are you sure you are a member and not just a shill trying to embarrass the rest of the party? After all if you claim to be a member you should at least get the name and the secret handshake right. Trying to fool the people by sounding democratic does not make you democratic. Did you think the rest of the country would not notice your change in what you call yourselves. Maybe you could change the name to the Peace and Love Party, I’m sure nobody would notice.
By the way, I see Daily Kos is calling Obama a DINO, are sure Clinton isn’t the titular head of the party.
For your listening enjoyment:
I have a question on this PDS thang. Who originated it, and did they copyright it? I mean, Pat Riley had ‘Threepeat’ copywritten. Anyway, those that use it a lot in their postings confuse me…They accuse everybody but themselves of having an obsession with a political figure (BDS, etc.), but don’t think that they themselves have an obsession with liberals and Obama? Reading the posts here one can only surmise the thinking here is pretty shallow. Talking point acronyms are for kids.
Oh, and Loki…you lose. You’re all over the place here, and are engaged in personal attacks from your very first posting. I made not one personal attack here, so I win. Basket Case is enabling you, and obviously the statement that I ‘came very close to crossing the line’ here is hogwash when you consider the multitude of personal attacks that you’ve been allowed to make here. Both you and Basket Case Manager owe me an apology.
Name-calling? Awww, shucks, Loki. Those were terms of endearment! Much like you all like to say “Democrat party.”
😀
http://www.intrade.com/v4/markets/?eventClassId=19
Hey…where’s Sarah?
Zoot said, “For your listening enjoyment:”
I’m confused about your post. Are you telling us you are an atheist?
Woobly,
Interesting, you consider the use of “Democrat party” a scouralous attack. I would consider it much worse to belong to the ‘Democratic Party’.
Zoot house said, “Hey…where’s Sarah?”
You really are not paying attention. She is not running,….. yet. 😀
Then you can get really afraid. Or worse. She could just make herself a nuisance to the liberals for the entire election cycle. Now that would be fun.
http://washingtonexaminer.com/blogs/capital-land/2011/06/poll-obama-neck-and-neck-unnamed-republican-va
Zoot said, “Both you and Basket Case Manager owe me an apology.”
You owe us an apology, for wasting our time.
By the way which liberal GOTV site do you and Woobly work for. I’d love to blog over there.
